Can You Switch Security Companies Without Breaking Your Contract?

You signed a contract with a security company — maybe two or three years ago — and now you regret it. The service is lackluster, the equipment feels outdated, and every time you call for help, you’re on hold for 20 minutes. Sound familiar? You’re not alone, and you have more options than you think.

Understanding Your Current Contract

Before you do anything, you need to know exactly what you signed. Most residential security contracts fall into a few common structures:

  • 36-month (3-year) contracts — The most common with national companies. Auto-renew for 12-month periods unless you cancel in a specific window.
  • 60-month (5-year) contracts — Less common but carry steepest early termination fees.
  • Month-to-month agreements — Just give 30 days notice and you’re done.
  • Equipment lease agreements — Sometimes separate from the monitoring contract.

Key details to find: start date, initial term length, auto-renewal clause, cancellation window, and early termination fee (ETF).

What Are Early Termination Fees?

Most contracts include an ETF — the remaining monthly payments. Example: 18 months remaining x $45/month = $810.

Strategies to Get Out Without Paying Full Price

  1. Wait for the cancellation window. Send written notice (certified mail) within that 30-60 day window.
  2. Negotiate directly. Ask for a 50% reduction — you’d be surprised how often it works.
  3. Document service failures. Repeated failures may constitute breach of contract.
  4. Check for a moving clause. Many contracts allow cancellation if you move outside the service area.
  5. Transfer the contract. Some agreements allow transfer to the new homeowner.
  6. Let it expire naturally. If only a few months remain, ride it out.

Important: Send Your Cancellation in Writing

Never rely on a phone call alone. Send written notice via certified mail with return receipt. Many companies will claim they “never received” a verbal cancellation.

What Witness Security Offers: No-Contract Takeover

  1. Free assessment — We evaluate your existing equipment.
  2. Contract review — We help you understand your obligations.
  3. Equipment takeover — We can often reuse your existing panel, sensors, and cameras.
  4. New monitoring activation — Connected to our Five Diamond center, often same-day.
  5. No contract required — Stay because you want to.

“I was stuck in a 36-month contract with a company that never returned my calls. Andrew at Witness helped me figure out my options, took over my existing equipment, and had me monitored by the end of the week. Zero pressure, zero contract. I wish I’d switched sooner.”

What Equipment Can Transfer?

  • Hardwired sensors — Almost always reusable.
  • Wireless sensors — Many are compatible across platforms.
  • Alarm panels — Newer panels can often be reprogrammed.
  • Security cameras — IP cameras usually transfer; proprietary ones may not.
  • Smart home devices — Z-Wave/Zigbee devices typically migrate.

Being trapped in a bad contract is frustrating, but not permanent. Call Witness Security at (918) 289-0880 for a free assessment and clear plan for making the switch — on your terms.
