The Challenge

A nondenominational church in Owasso, Oklahoma had grown rapidly over the previous three years — from a single worship building to a multi-building campus with a main sanctuary, a children’s ministry wing, a fellowship hall, and an administrative office building. With over 1,200 members and multiple weekly events, the campus saw heavy foot traffic from Sunday services, midweek youth programs, community outreach events, and a preschool that operated five days a week.

The church had no formal security system. Doors were left unlocked during events, there was no way to know who was entering the children’s wing, and the only cameras were two outdated units in the parking lot that hadn’t recorded usable footage in years. After a nearby church experienced a break-in and several national incidents made headlines, the church leadership formed a safety committee and reached out to Witness Security. Their biggest concern: protecting the children’s ministry areas and managing building access during events — without making the campus feel like a fortress. The budget was limited, drawn from a dedicated safety fund the congregation had contributed to.

Our Solution

Witness Security worked closely with the church safety committee to design a phased security system that addressed the highest-priority vulnerabilities first and could expand as budget allowed. We focused on three core areas: access control, camera coverage, and emergency response.

• Access control on 6 exterior doors — electronic locks with keycard readers on the main sanctuary entrance, children’s wing entrance, fellowship hall, admin building, and two emergency exits; all other exterior doors locked by default during events
• Children’s wing check-in system — parents check children in with a printed name tag; the wing entrance locks automatically 15 minutes after service starts, and only credentialed volunteers can badge in during the service
• 12 HD cameras — covering the main parking lot, all building entrances, the children’s hallway, the fellowship hall, and the sanctuary lobby; cameras are visible enough to deter but unobtrusive in design
• 4 wireless panic buttons — distributed to the head usher, children’s ministry director, lead pastor, and front desk administrator; pressing any button triggers an immediate alert to the monitoring station and sends a push notification to the safety committee
• 24/7 professional monitoring — intrusion detection after hours with fire and CO sensors in every building
• Centralized management — the church administrator manages access schedules, camera views, and alarm status from a single app

We scheduled the installation across two weeks, working around the church’s event calendar. No Sunday services or preschool days were disrupted.

The Results

The church campus now operates with a level of security that the congregation can feel without it being overbearing. The children’s ministry area has been the biggest win — parents routinely comment on how much safer they feel dropping off their kids.
